Let $P,Q\in \mathcal{S}$. Let $\Delta X=(\Delta t,\Delta x,\Delta y,\Delta z):=P-Q$ the 4-vector going from $P$ to → $Q$. We may define the quantity $\Delta \tau$

$$\Delta {\tau }^2:=\Delta t^2-\Delta x^2-\Delta y^2-\Delta z^2$$

as the proper time between $P$ & $Q$.
